- You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in
- combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted
- a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon
- civilians. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl
- Harbor, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the
- Union Aerospace Corporation.
-
- The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive
- waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and
- Deimos. With no action for fifty million miles, your day
- consisted of suckin' dust and watchin' restricted flicks in
- the rec room.
-
- For the last four years the military, UAC's biggest
- supplier, has used the remote facilities on Phobos and
- Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including
- research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they have
- been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos,
- throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out
- the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown
- dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them
- have either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form
- of insanity--babbling vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that
- breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of full-
- body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to
- the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports
- state that the research is suffering a small set-back, but
- everything is under control.
-
- A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from
- Phobos. "We require immediate military support. Something
- fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer
- systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon
- afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then,
- attempts to establish contact with either moon have been
- unsuccessful.
-
- You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty
- million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were
- ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest
- of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio
- picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling
- orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence.
- Seems your buddies are dead.
-
- It's Up To You
-
- Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off
- the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have
- been taken by the assault team leaving you with only a
- pistol. If only you could get your hands around a plasma
- rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on your
- way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of
- pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the
- landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial
- firepower somewhere within the station.
-
- As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear
- animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors.
- They know you're here. There's no turning back now.

- IMPORTANT INFORMATION! DOOM and data communications.
-
- Simply stated, data communications is nearly a miracle.
- Phone lines are unstable, modems are different, computers
- are different, communications software is different, and
- the list goes on and on.
-
- Because of this, you can expect some momentary delays or
- choppiness while playing such data-intensive games as DOOM.
- There are literally thousands of factors that effect the
- stability and smoothness of each game, and very few of them
- are manageable, not to mention controllable.
-
- Multiplayer DOOM games are always synchronized. If your
- player seems a little sluggish, don't worry, your opponents
- are exactly the same way. When your system pauses, so does
- theirs and vice versa. So, if you get your butt kicked
- royally in a good Deathmatch, don't blame it on sluggishness
- or choppiness. The game was the same for the player that
- toasted you. YOU LOST, FAIR AND SQUARE!
-
- Below is the "choppy DOOM game" top-ten reason list:
-
- 1 - Compression/Error Correction/Flow Control has
- not been disabled on one of the player's modems.
- Be sure to use the correct modem init string!
- 2 - DOOM just "bogs" sometimes, even on really fast
- systems. This is usually caused by HD access.
- 3 - Your system is somewhat slow because of hardware
- or configuration problems.
- 4 - Another player's system is even worse that yours.
- 5 - You have a "dirty" phone line.
- 6 - Another player has a "dirty" phone line.
- 7 - Solar flares. Yeah, that's it!
- 8 - You forgot to disable call waiting by putting
- *70 before your BBS phone number when dialing.
- 9 - Some other idiot forgot to disable his call
- waiting. (What a jerk!)
- 10 - The BBS you are using is wimpy and can't handle
- the multiplayer load.
- |
- Using APCiLINK
-
- The APCiLINK software (part of APCiDOOM) connects you to
- up to three other players across the APCi MultiPlayer Game
- Server. It allows modem DOOM players to finally experience
- the same game available to network-owning players!
-
- Using APCiLINK is simple - APCiDOOM handles most of the
- work for you. All you need to do is supply a few pieces of
- critical information.
-
- Under the FILE menu, you will find an option called
- APCiLINK SETUP. Selecting it displays the configuration
- screen for APCiLINK. APCiLINK set up will run the first time
- you run APCiDOOM. Below is a list of required setup values
- and their descriptions.
-
- PHONE NUMBER - Enter the phone number of the host BBS here.
- This number will be used by APCiTERM to call the BBS
- which has an APCi MultiPlayer Game Server.
-
- USER ID - Your User ID should be the same ID you use on the
- BBS that will be hosting DOOM. The APCi MultiPlayer
- Game Server uses this information to keep the players
- straight during a three or four player game.
-
- MODEM INIT STRING - This is the command which will be used
- by APCiTERM to initialize your modem and optimize it
- for use with the APCi MultiPlayer Game Server. You
- may find a suitable init string in a listing found by
- pressing the INIT STRINGS button.
-
- COM PORT - This is the COM port your modem is connected to.
- APCiLINK will automatically detect the UART used and
- enable 16550 FIFOs for improved performance on systems
- that support FIFO operation. Be sure that your COM ports
- are set to their "standard" values. APCiLINK supports
- COM ports in the following configurations only:
-
- COM BASE IRQ
- --- ---- ---
- 1 3F8 4
- 2 2F8 3
- 3 3E8 4
- 4 2E8 3
-
- PORT SPEED - This is the baud rate at which your computer
- communicates with your modem. A port speed of 38400 is
- standard. Faster port speeds should not be used without
- 16550 UARTs. If you aren't sure, leave it at 38400.
-
- If you suspect that the phone lines are noisy, try turning
- ERROR CORRECTION back on. See your modem documentation for
- more detailed information.
- |
- Using APCiTERM to connect to the host BBS.
-
- APCiTERM is a simplified ANSI terminal emulation program
- that may be used to connect to the host BBS of an APCi
- MultiPlayer Game Server.
-
- Select APCiTERM from the GAME menu to initiate terminal
- emulation. If your most recent modem initialization
- enabled carrier detection (AT &C1) then APCiTERM will
- automatically initialize your modem using the command
- listed in APCiLINK setup.
-
- Pressing ALT-M or clicking on the blue status bar at the
- top of the terminal emulation screen will pop up another
- menu. From this menu, you may use your keyboard or mouse
- to dial the host BBS at the number specified in APCiLINK
- setup. Once connected to the host BBS, follow the BBS's
- menu prompts to connect to the APCi MultiPlayer Game Server.
-
- Once connected to the APCiMPGS, you may pop up your terminal
- menu again and select DOOM! to enter APCiCHAT and chat with
- other players and start a game. When you have exited your
- game, you will return immediately to APCiCHAT. You may then
- begin additional games, or exit to APCiDOOM.
-
- You may return to the BBS by entering APCiTERM again. When
- you have completed your online session, you may use your
- terminal menu and select HANG UP. If you do not log off the
- BBS or otherwise hang up your modem, you may be online for
- quite a while possibly incurring online fees or phone
- charges. Always log off properly to avoid such a situation.
- |
- CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT configurations.
-
- The following system file configurations have been found
- to be effective with DOOM 1.X and MS DOS 6.X:
-
- CONFIG.SYS contents...
-
- DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
- DOS=HIGH
-
- AUTOEXEC.BAT contents...
-
- @ECHO OFF
- PROMPT $P$G
- PATH=C:\DOS
- LH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /L <<- If you have enough RAM
- LH MOUSE
- CD\DOOM
-
- You may want to create a boot diskette with these system
- files on it. To create a boot diskette, insert a formatted
- disketted into drive A: and type SYS A: at a DOS prompt.
-
- If you are familiar with DOS 6.X and multi-configs, you may
- want to add these to your configurations. See DOS help for
- more information about using multiple configurations. Type
- HELP from a DOS prompt for a listing of HELP topics.
-
- If all else fails, you may "boot cleanly" by simply pressing
- your F5 key at boot-up when the "Starting MS-DOS" message
- is displayed.

- Playing DOOM with the original WAD file.
-
- DOOM uses a large resource file with a "WAD" extension. This
- file is basically a large database of all of DOOM's elements,
- including graphics and sound. Each WAD file contains one or
- more game "episodes" which contain multiple levels.
-
- Before you begin each multiplayer game, you must agree upon
- the games settings. The following configuration options
- are available:
-
- EPISODE - The shareware version of DOOM contains only one
- episode, "Knee-Deep in the Dead." However, the
- registered version contains two additional episodes.
- It is recommended that you play these episodes in order
- as they increase in difficulty.
-
- TYPE - You may pay cooperatively with other players and help
- each other solve DOOM, or you may play against others
- for points. Either way, the monsters are against you
- and you can kill anything including the other players.
- Purposely killing others during a cooperative match is
- guaranteed to label yourself an annoying player, so try
- to resist the temptation! DOOM v1.4 introduces a new
- Deathmatch v2.0 game: items respawn!
-
- LEVEL - Each episode may contain several levels. It is
- recommended that you play the levels in order as they
- increase in difficulty.
-
- SKILL - You may choose from the following difficulty levels:
- 1 - I'm too young to die. This level is good for
- learning your way around and learning to control
- your player. Otherwise, it's for wimps!
- 2 - Hey, not too rough. Another wimpy level for those
- who need more practice. More monsters than level 1.
- 3 - Hurt me plenty. This is the first challenging level
- but still doesn't cut it for a blood-thirsty DOOM
- veteran. Yet more monsters than level 2.
- 4 - Ultra-violence. Now were talking carnage! This is
- the way REAL soldiers play DOOM. Monsters around
- every corner, and they really know how to fight!
- 5 - NIGHTMARE! No kidding! Same number of monsters as
- level 4, but they move and shoot much much faster.
- Worse yet, once you think they're dead, look out!
- Monsters "respawn" (come back to life) after just
- eight seconds. Good luck, and nice knowing you.
-
- OTHER - If you are really a wimp, or if you want to play an
- unobstructed "deathmatch" game, you may chose the "NO
- MONSTERS" option. If you want just a little taste of
- NIGHTMARE, choose "RESPAWN" and monsters will come back
- to life after eight seconds. This is also a great way
- to play "deathmatch."
-
- REMEMBER!!! All players MUST have EXACTLY the same options!
- If you don't have the same options, THE GAME WILL NOT START!
-
- The PREVIEW button allows players to take a look at the level
- map before starting the game. Using keyboard or mouse allows
- players to pan across level maps and zoom in and out for
- detail or overviews.
-
- Always SAVE your options. Pressing CANCEL will ignore any
- and all changes you have made.
- |
- Playing DOOM with a third-party add-in WAD file.
-
- The registered version of DOOM allows for playing of many
- third-party WAD files that contain home-made episodes.
- The settings for third-party WAD files are very similar to
- the standard WAD file settings. You may play these WAD
- files with other players, but all players MUST be using the
- same one. Id Software does NOT provide support for these
- WAD files, so if you have problems, you need to contact the
- author. Most WAD files are found on BBSs and the Internet.
- |
- Saving and resuming multiplayer DOOM games.
-
- You may save your DOOM game at any time by pressing ESCAPE
- and selecting SAVE from the DOOM main menu, or by pressing
- the F2 key. Once you have created a save file, you may
- update it quickly by pressing F6. Saving a multiplayer game
- will write a save file to the hard disk drives of all
- players in the game.
-
- To resume a saved game, you MUST be playing with the same
- players that were in the game when it was saved. Each player
- must go to the GAME menu and select STANDARD SAVEGAME SETUP.
-
- If you were using a third-party WAD file when your game was
- saved, you must go to the GAME menu and select ADD-IN
- SAVEGAME SETUP and select the appropriate WAD file.
- |
- Suggestions...?
-
- If you have suggestions for improved game performance such
- as modified modem init strings and system configurations,
- please contact APCi at 1-800-535-APCi. This is NOT a
- technical support line. Your sysop has assumed this
- responsibility by using the APCi MultiPlayer Game Server.
-
- If you feel that you have found errors or "bugs" in the
- APCiDOOM software and not within DOOM itself, please report
- them to your sysop who has been asked to make sense out of
- them and notify us.
